Sequoia and Redwood Writing Desk

We recently made a writing desk from a few of my prized lumber possessions that I have been hoarding for a few years. The top is old-growth Sequoia that was harvested after a fire knocked it down in the 1980s in Sequoia National Forest. There are roughly 60 growth rings per inch, which is the most I have ever seen. That’s 1300 years of growth on this desktop alone! The base is made from reclaimed 8” x 8” Redwood beams that came from a demolition project in Los Angeles. I really wanted to design something that would utilize those beautiful Redwood rings, so we stacked the beams on top of each other and faced them toward the front to show off the rings. They remind me of a good topography map. I love the way this came together.
